4 stars ( Microsoft Streets and Trips 2005 Review) - Used together with Google Earth, you'll never be lost. Needs 3-D realism as this is the future of maps and GPS. And imagery will be read on the windshield without obscuring view of traffic. 5 stars (Excellent) - I travel quite a bit and the maps are handy to have on the laptop or in looking up directions prior. Personally I like to be able to look up the map itself and decide how to get there myself (therefore I do not use the programs directions feature). Maps seem accurate and up to date. The program locates places quickly. ... 1 stars (Rand McNally should have stood in bed. . .) - I don't think a thorough review of this is in order, because YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BUY IT. While it has some cute features, the main problem is that it DOESN'T KNOW ANY ADDRESSES of anyone I've tried to find. My own house has been here 50 years and the address is not in the program. '1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC' is not there (though 'White House' is). None of my friends' addresses are there. It seldom can even find an intersection ('no match found'). On the other hand, Microsoft Streets & Trips has 90% of the addresses I've asked it to find. Too bad, because the GPS interface on R-M is good and it's exceedingly primitive on Streets & Trips. 4 stars (What program are these people using?) - I am surprised to see the many negative comments on this product. The only issue I have had with it is that my GPS initially did not work properly. This was due to Windows XP recognizing it as a serial pointing device and had nothing to do with the software. I had the same issue with streets and trips. Once I got that ironed out, it has worked perfectly for me. I used it recently to plan a cross country trip and it worked fine. I was able to get back on track a couple of times when I took a wrong turn simply by using the GPS for reference. I see that some complained that you have to be online to use the program but this is not true. You DO need to be online to get current updates on road construction, but this should be done before leaving home where you have internet access anyway, not on the road. I think that perhaps people are expecting a lot from a program that costs less than 50 bucks. Take the tutorials included with the program, plan your trip at home or in the hotel, not on the road and use a little common sense and it will work fine for you. My only complaint would be that there is no option to update the street-level city maps via the internet. 1 stars (Dont Even waste your time with this Software) - Wh... 5 stars ("Traveling Light") - This is by far one of the best books I have ever read. Max Lucado has a way of sharing his insight in a manner that everyone can learn from. Need a lift in your life; need to unload some of the excess baggage you are carrying around. This is the book that will help you do it. 5 stars (Very Inspiring) - I listened to the book on tape of Traveling Light. It was very enjoyable and entertaining and also very inspiring. Max Lucado used images and descriptions in his teaching that make the lessons very easy to understand. He is very knowledgable and gets his point across in a manner that is easy to follow. This is a great book for someone who wants a better understanding of the Psalm, or who is looking for an easy to follow inspirational message. 5 stars (Carry a Lighter Load.) - I started reading some of Lucado's work about 5 years ago and have always found it a perfect fit for whatever situation I am currently in. This particular novel is great in breaking down some of the more common excess baggage that we all carry daily. It is a self-help book tightly wrapped with anecdotes that make it an entertaining read while dealing with a very heavy subject. The study pages in the back make it an even more useful tool for dissecting your life. This is a book that you can read all at once for pleasure or in multiple sittings for use as a daily devotional. ... It made sense of relationships and lifes outcomes. It spells out that "Life is difficult" get over it and start living, But Scott Peck says it persuasively and with great love. 4 stars (Let Anne tell her story) - God rescued Anne from a horrible situation. And the thing that broke the ice, so to speak, was something that most church-goers like myself hardly think of as a missionary outreach: the simple act of singing songs of praise to God when we are gathered together. At that point in her life, Anne wasn't much interested in hearing preaching, but the music, and then the love, drew her in. God, in his sovereign will, chose to use a Christian congregation far outside of my "box" to reach Anne. And as the story goes on, we see that Anne also has her God in a pre-conceived box. But I, from my conservative point of view, have to be merciful, remembering what God has brought Anne, and me, out of. Every Christian is in recovery, from all the crap of our past whatever it was. And with God's help, we are growing, learning to love those who don't think like we do, and slowly realizing that God is beyond any of our human boxes: totally awesome, pure, wise, loving, forgiving, patient.... Anne Lamott, I, every Christian, are "traveling" on that road to greater faith, and we are in constant need of God's "mercies." 5 stars (A real conversion experience, in all its messiness) - Salvation and baptism are for people stained with sin, people who have been walking too long on the wrong path. It's amazing that Christians, who know this about salvation, fail so regularly at depicting what a conversion experience is like. Lamott tells a lot of stories and shares a host of ruminations in this book, but her account of her conversion experience is the highlight and is more than worth the price of the book. 5 stars (We're Only Human) - Anne Lamott style of writing and style of life make this collection of essays a delight to read. She's honest, humble, humorous and spiritual-all wrapped up in a nice package. Every person reading this book will identify with the life challenges, questions about faith and quirky happenings that Anne speaks about. She ... 3 stars (Good for a traveler, Not for a class) - I began using this as text for a class of mine, but quickly only used it as a supplement. You are to simply copy the words and say them in 10 minutes each day. It's a great theory, but very difficult to absorb any language through this method. The vocabulary is bent toward the traveler - what to pack, where's the restaurant, I'd like to order, that type of phrasing. The color pictures make it seem like it might be aimed at a younger crowd, but the exercises were a bit stale for anyone under high school age. Overall, this is a good crash course if you're about to leave for a week's vacation in a Spanish-speaking country. To learn how to truly communicate in Spanish, you need something more thorough on grammar points and practice. The fact that no CD comes with it also makes pronunciation a concern for the novice learner. For the much younger child, Flip Flop Spanish is a great tool which comes with a CD. 3 stars (Could have been good) - This is a way for people to learn spanish fast but the book goes through things very quickly so you will find that you either don't understand or forget thing easily. I only suggest this book to someone how just wants to travel to a country that speaks spanish for a week but not for people who are truly interested in learning to speak spanish fleuntly at a good level. 2 stars (Useful for Some; But Not the Best) - I found this book to be useful at first, but I later changed to "Spanish Made Simple" (Jackson, Rubio revised by Nemethy; make sure you get the 2004 edition). The latter book is not nearly as "simplified" as "Spanish in 10 Minutes", but I found the more methodical approach, reviews, and review tests to be more conducive to study. Make sure you also get some means of audio instruction to get the pronouciation right. I used the Pimsleur CD's which are very expensive but easily the best. 1 stars (ZERO STARS !!!!!!!!) - I use the desktop software and have been content with it. I find STreet Atlas easier to use but INACCURATE and MS Streets and Trips to be MORE accurate but less intuitive. Street Atlas for Handheld is a complete, unfinished, unpolished, inaccurate and VERY unintuitive waste of money! Basically, the reviews previous to mine have said it all. I would recommend Tom Tom Navigator for Handhelds or Microsoft's Streets and Trips for PocketPC. 1 stars (Flush your money down the toilet!) - At least you'll get to see it swirl around before it disappears. Then you can walk away and forget it instead of wasting HOURS AND HOURS in frustration after you've wasted the money. I bought this program because I thought it would be more current on the local streets than my old GPS software that came out in 2003 - WRONG! Less current, and not nearly as user friendly or anything else you want street GPS for. The other reviews do a good job of telling you some of the weaknesses. I just wish I had read them before I bought this trash. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS IF YOU ARE THINKING OF USING IT WITH A HANDHELD DEVICE!!! 1 stars (Worst handheld application ever!) - I've been developing software for over 30 years and have never seen (and spent money on!) a worse piece of commercial software!! It's not even good enough to be called an Alpha version! If the developers ever used this software on a road-trip, I'm sure they're all dead by now since it's so badly designed that it's actually a danger to anyone that uses it! Here are just a few things to hate about this program: 1) Selecting map rectangles in the desktop app is slow and anti-intuitive. 2) The handheld software draws maps very slowely, if at all! 3) None of the controls on the display are intuitive. I tried for hours to figure out how to make the icon that represents the car, stay in the middle and have the map move. Still haven't figured it out!! 4) Trying to route to an address... 4 stars (It works with OSX Tiger, but...) - Seller says this doesn't work with Tiger, but it works. All GPS road map doesn't give the shortest route and this is no exception. Mine came bundled with a GPS receiver that I was surprised worked very well. I just wish I can just install US roads without installing Canada and other non-essential that takes up hard drive space and slows down the search. I'm sure Canadians would want the same if they want to use this and not have to install US info unless they want to. Could be made simpler and faster intuitive locate of streets. I don't need every thing that says San Antonio like a bake shop when I am looking for the city map of San Antonio or just a street. 2005 is almost over and I don't see any updates on their website. Overall I would give this a nod if you want to bring your iBook or PB and use it as a GPS road map, otherwise, spend an extra $300 and get a handheld black and white screen GPS. 1 stars (Embarassing) - Route 66 should hang their developer heads in shame for putting this product out. The app seems to be a bare minimum port from its Windows version. The first indication of this is the ugly port of the "help" contents (which are an obvious attempt at mimicking the Windows help system, via a Java applet) UI - No keyboard shortcut to go between zoom in/out and drag. No way to convert GPS coords to decimal, or to search by lat/lon. The UI is a clunky artifact of the mid-90's, if not before. Type in a search and hit return... nothing happens.. you have to click on "Find". Compare and contrast simple navigation to Google Maps! Case closed. Speed - I'm running on a 1.33 ghz PowerBook, with the most recent Route 66 patch. Using 16mb of cache (in the preferences) doesn't help much. This is 2005.. surely you would expect a dedicated app to outperform Google map. Not this one. I am not kidding when I say this is slow. You may say "well, run it on a dual processor G5!"... and I would counter with "I want...
