Dress Your Best - The Complete Guide to Finding the Style That-s Right for Your Body

5 stars (Well Done!) - This book is the best of it's kind. It is simple and to the point. It's going to change the way I approach shopping for clothes. Stacy and Clinton work to make people look good no matter what their shape or weight or height or figure flaws. When I saw some of the pictures of people (in their underwear) I thought, "No way are they going to make this person look good!" But I was wrong every single time. The people look good. They look together. It made me feel good just to see the change. What I think Stacy and Clinton are about is that they want people to feel good about their bodies no matter what(or where) their problem areas are. What they show us in this book is that we all really can have our "outsides" match our "insides." 5 stars (Stacy and Clinton Don't Disappoint) - I was thrilled to see the American hosts of What Not To Wear co authored a book. The show is fabulous and the book lives up to that standard. First, the book helps you identify your body type not by using some fruit or obscure geometric shape but real world identifiers. The guidelines they use are so simple they make sense for those of us not so handy with a tape measure. Also, the book does not assume every one who is petite is a size 6. Guidelines are given for a variety of shapes, sizes and heights. It also shows you how to dress for work, play and formal occasions. My absolute favorite part is the pictures in the back of the book that show and tell (some fashion books assume you know what a bolero jacket looks like). No assumptions are made here this book provides pictures for everything the authors talk about or recommend which to me makes perfect sense. Fashion is so visual and at last there is a fashion book with actual pictures of real people wearing the right clothes instead of 3 or 4 cartoon drawings that supposedly represent human body shapes or pictures of the same two people who supposedly represent every figure flaw or asset. The New Clay- Techniques and Approaches to Jewelry Making

5 stars (The Book that started it all for Polymer Clay) - It was the first book about PC. It was the only book available for quite some time. Many of the most renowned PC artists started with this book and you can see the influence in their work. I have just about every PC book there is and this one has some of the best explanations of the underlying basic methods available. Sort of like the "alphabet" of PC. I reread it often. I consider it a reference book rather than a project book. I have seen another very new PC enthusiast buy the book and dislike it (as a previous reviewer mentioned.) I think this comes from someone making a cursory review of the pictures in the book and deciding that is not what they want to make. I think they may have missed the trees for the forest. There is a lot of depth there. I highly recommend it for anyone serious about learning polymer clay. 1 stars (Disappointed) - I am extremely disappointed with this book. I bought it because I thought it would provide more ideas for "Jewelry Making"-it did not. When this book arrived, I had been working with polymer clay for 4 days and I learned nothing from the book that I had not figured out for myself, with the exception of how to make weird naked women from clay-not quite was a looking for.A waste of [money]. 5 stars (I worship this book!!!) - If you want to learn to make canes this is your Bible. It is not limited to cane but its step by step guide to all the different types is terrific. I must look at it several times a week. Love it. ...

The Knit Stitch The Knitting Experience- Book 1

5 stars (The Knitting experience: Book 1: The Knit Stitch) - I am an experience knitter and I love this book. The designs are not only simple but aesthetically beautiful. I am inspired to knit them all. Christine Montano. 5 stars (The Knit Stitch) - Loved this book. Good for beginners as well as seasoned knitters. 5 stars (This is the books that is teaching me to knit) - As a experienced crocheter, I've been disappointed with the lack of nice sweater patterns. So I decided to learn how to knit. After reading "Knitting for Dummies", I was just as confused as before. Then I picked up this book. The book is extremely easy to read and learn from. The step by step photos are very helpful when you are trying to decipher where the heck your hands, fingers, and yarn should be. By following along with the photos, I have been able to successfully complete two projects in this book, and I am beginning another one. The patterns are very nice. Of course, as with any pattern book, there are some that I have no interest in making, but there are at least 5 more that I can't wait to try. One reviewer has said that the patterns are monotanous with lots of knitting. Ms Melville states in the book that these projects were designed with lots of knitting on purpose, in order to have the new knitter practice, practice, practice. To me, there is an upside and a downside to this. The upside: by the time I finished the bulky yarn poncho, I had mastered the knit stitch and tension. The downside: I would like to make the Best Friend Jacket ( a cool assymetrical sweater ), but in order to get enough yarn for it, I'm going to be dropping a chunk of money for the yarn. This can be daunting for a newbie, who is unsure of their commitment to the craft (I, personally, am ordering my $100 worth of yarn today for the jacket, after 3 weeks of debating whether I would actually finish it or not) A side note on the patterns I have finished: The super bulky weight poncho turned out AW...

Ceramics- A Potter-s Handbook

5 stars (A great book for beginners as well as seasoned ceramicists) - A wealth of knowledge can be found in this timeless book that covers all the major aspects of ceramics. For the novice, it covers the the world's history of ceramics. Discusses clay and glaze compositions and gives step by step explanations of the various techniques from wheel throwing to hand building to making plaster molds for slip casting. For the advanced ceramist, there is good information of various kilns and their construction. It offers analysis of several major clays, frits, and feldspars as well as other useful reference tables including some recipes for glazes from low fire to high fire. I first bought the book in '82 as a college freshman and it has proven a valuable aid ever since. It is on the top of my "required reading" list for anyone interested in getting involved with studio ceramics. ...

Build Your Own Electric Vehicle

4 stars (My first referance in my Q8 - EV) - This book is very useful for EV projects and contains a lot of theoretical and practical information. My EV was the first one in my country (Kuwait) because of this book and (Convert it). It is really dependable assuming that you have mechanical skills. Good Luck!!!! 2 stars (Want to build an electric car ? Not real easy.) - I think Bob Brant really wants to help you build an electric vehicle. I feel, however that his engineering background causes him to "talk down" to the reader, who thinks " It can't be really as complex as all this ! All these formulas , etc ! " How do we know the "flux level" for a motor we buy at a garage sale ? I am too old to get an engineering degree ! Lots of "shade tree" mechanics ( like me ) will have to look further for more practical information.Such as - a 10 HP motor in a Geo Metro will be fine for trips to the grocery store but no good for highway use. Also errors have crept in, and the schematic diagrams are incomplete and puzzling. Of course, the book was published nine years ago, and technology has advanced in the EV industry, as in everything else 4 stars (Add this to your library) - Usefull information about EV. This give you some wide idea about electric cars. It's a good book for your technical library specially if you'r going to build one EV and are a beginer. ...

The Art of Metal Clay

5 stars (Precious metal clay book) - This is a wonderful book. It came quickly and is a great price. I am always pleased with buying from Amazon. 5 stars (Great book to learn from) - I have recently been interested in polymer clay and when I found out that there was Metal Clay I was very excited. In hopes to find out more, I recently ordered Sherri Haab book as well as Precious Metal Clay in Mixed Media, by Mary Ann Devos. Sherri's book is a much better book for me as a beginner. I'm more of a visual learner and I do better with picture steps, which this book has. Very detailed written and pictured steps that help guide me through the projects. It includes creative uses of tools that can easily be found around the house or at a local thift store. She also shows detailed ideas of how to mix different mediums together. I feel like my projects will have more of a success rate do to this book. 5 stars (I LOVE this book!) - Great projects, great photography and easy to follow instructions. It's a perfect introduction to PMC, and will totally inspire you! ...

Alterknits - Imaginative Projects and Creativity Exercises

5 stars (Lovely presentation, innovative ideas) - One of the reasons I love this book is its gorgeous presentation. Let's face it, at least 50% of a book's appeal is how it is photographed and laid out - this book gets an A from me. There are a few projects that are quite "Meh" (like the knitted crowns - though I think my daughter will love one) but the ideas are wonderful. It is worth a look. A small "notebook" is included inside the front cover, it is just knitter's graph paper but a cute idea even if I won't be using it. Knit a window/door screen with nylon thread? Why not? I also love the armchair cushion - I am inspired to find an old leather chair just to make that cushion. Another favorite is the little knitted "lanterns" meant for adding to a string of lights. Wrist warmers have been done to death, but here they are photographed on a model holding a guinea pig - I have to admit, I am charmed :^) A lot of luxury yarns and new ideas for knitting. 5 stars (irresistible for the adventurous knitter) - I LOVE this book. I got it 3 days ago & already have 2 projects started from it! The patterns are so well written; clear & concise. The photography is beautiful! And there are truly new & creative things in here! I love the creative "exercices" sprinkled throughout the book, like "describe your dream knitting day". Or my fave, is to "write down all of things that prevent you from being creative as you want to be, put them in a bag, and throw the bag away". It is a beautiful book that even my non-knitting friends love to flip through! 5 stars (Another Interesting New Entry) - There are a lot of very new, modern knitting books coming out as of late and this is one of them. The approach is away from the ordinary - the knitting most of us grew up with in the 1960-1980's. This book has some great patterns with versatility and it also includes ideas which are following the popular "salvaging" trend - using up old knitted items in new ways. Very n...

What Not To Wear for Every Occasion

3 stars (Fun and helpful) - There are some good tips in this book and the fact that there are do and don't photos is helpful. Some of the don'ts look like do's to me though, so I guess I need the book I found the accessories to be particularly fun and inspiring 4 stars (What Not Wear for Every Occasion) - Gives a great overview of how to dress with sytle and class. 1 stars (hard to decide which is worse) - the outfits they disdain or the outfits they recommend...both are generally impractical and/or in plain bad taste.Skip this one unless you can find it in the dollar bin and feel like lauughing at ugly clothes-there's a plethora here. ...

Odd Ball Knitting - Creative Ideas for Leftover Yarn

3 stars (Not totally unique -- but still helpful for the stash-stumped) - For knitters looking to clear the stash out from under the bed (to make room for-let's be honest here-more yarn), Barbara Albright has written Odd Ball Knitting. In this book, Albright provides a plethora of tips and patterns for knitters looking to do a little stash-busting. From small patterns that use just a little bit of yarn (like finger puppets or scarves or sachets) to larger projects that use different kinds of yarn to create one unique piece (like a colorful striped poncho or shawl), Albright provides plenty of solutions for stashes of every size and color palette. While many of the projects are pretty standard-projects that you can find on the pages other knitting books and magazines-Albright does something that no one else has done. She puts them together in one stash-focused book to aid the stash-stumped. She also throws in tips for storing yarn, stash-busting, and even for figuring out just how much yarn is left on a partially-used ball. The chart provided in the back of the book also allows you to choose projects based on what you've got stored behind your sofa. If your home is under siege by yarn balls of various colors and sizes and you don't feel like flipping through your collection of books and magazines to search for just the right pattern, Odd Ball Knitting will get you started on the road to stash-free living. Or at least it'll help you clear up some room for the next clearance sale at your local yarn shop. 1 stars (Waste of Money) - I was hoping to see some new and creative ways to use leftover yarn. This book does not deliver. 3 stars (Eh) - Most of these patterns can be found for free someplace on the internet. I did not find anything here that was overly creative or that really said, "Oh yea.... I could do THAT!" This would probably be something for a new knitter. ...

Your First Quilt Book or it should be-

5 stars (Great for the beginner) - They were right at being the book for the beginner. What a great way to learn with step by step directions. 3 stars (Better books on the market) - After reviewing this book; there are better books that I read. One being quilting for dummies. "Your first quilt book", did not supply me with the basics in a interesting format. 5 stars (Good book for beginners like me.) - The pictures are excellent and show details of the construction of a quilt . . . from the first cut, through sewing units together, ironing the seams open. Dream Sewing Spaces- Design - Organization for Spaces Large - Small

5 stars (Great idea book) - I went shopping for a sewing desk for my Viking Husqvarna & my Babylock serger & was surprised to find a table/cabinet/desk for both was over $1,000. This book offers some cost-effective solutions for sewing storage/workplace options & gives guidelines for sewing ergonomics. Great suggestions are also offered for storing fabric, buttons, thread, etc. Great book. 5 stars (Just What the Dr. Ordered) - This book gave me every piece of information I was seeking to design a sewing room from design arrangements to the actual height & dimensions a work surface should have. This book took into consideration all types of sewing one might do as well as tips for convenience should one not have the luxury of a separate sewing space. Specific storage suggestions and directions for building such things as thread racks were very timely for me. Dream Sewing Spaces was an extremely helpful tool. 5 stars (Great resource) - I was considering hiring a professional interior designer but I bought this book and now I don't need to. It is a great resource, including lots of ideas for creating the kind of furniture you want for your room from stock materials. I've planned my new room, and I'll put it together over Labor Day. ...

500 Cups - Ceramic Explorations of Utility - Grace A Lark Ceramics Book

5 stars (inspirational) - This book is as fantastic as 500 teapots! It is full of inspiration! I love it and highly recommend it, buy it now, don't wait another second! 5 stars (Great Reference) - Like so many of the Lark books, this one is filled with, you guessed it, 500 photos. Nicely dnone I might add (I am a commercial photographer who dabbles in ceramics to keep myself sane...ish). Now I must admit that I didn't actually count the photo's to see if there are exactly 500, but I'll bet the editor did. This book isn't a technique book, but a beautiful reference of about any imaginable ceramic cup, functional and not (some are full of holes and would hold nothing but cotton), traditional, contemporary, Japanese style, hand built, thrown, altered and, well, just about everything I have personally ever been exposed to or even heard about. I love this book. I find great inspiration as I turn each page. If you are looking for references, inspiration, or just some great ceramic works, I highly recommend this book. Journey of an Art Quilter - Creative Strategies and Techniques

5 stars (Journey of an Art Quilter) - Barbara Olson shares a lot of her knowledge and encourages each and everyone of us to become the artist we were meant to be. I would say that this is not a beginning quilter book but an intermediate to advanced intermediate quilt book. Barbara is sharing and inspiring. Illustrations and directions are clear and this is a very readable book. 5 stars (Sophisticated and Inspiring) - This is not your ordinary show and tell book. The projects are sophisticated and inspiring. Instructions are comprehensive and easy to follow even for a beginner, but an advanced quilter would be impressed and could learn a thing or two. 1 stars (Journey of an Art Quilter: Creative Strategies and Techniques) - I thought it was a very interesting, creative, inspiring book. The Art of Floral Design Art of Floral Design

5 stars (A Student's Review) - A comprehensive guide to floral care and designing. The author has complete instructions with illustrations which are very helpful. The author also teaches concepts through repetition and ties the chapters together by reviewing past concepts. 5 stars (Excellent Textbook of the Basics of Floral Design) - We used this textbook in our 'intro to floral design' course at Texas A&M University. I thought it did an excellent job of teaching all of the basic design principles, and it also had very good pictures and diagrams to aide in the learning. Unfortunately, I sold this book at the end of the semester, and I wish that I had kept it. I have been looking for a more economically priced floral design book, as complete as this one, and have not been able to find it. I you are a beginning designer, or need the ultimate floral design reference, this is the book for you! 5 stars (Textbook Style Book) - This is a great book. It is a textbook style book, so it is a little on the technical side. If you are interested in retail floristry then you will find it to be a great book. But if you are a hobbyist or are looking for a book to give you ideas for arrangements to place around the house/office this book maybe more technical than you want. ...

Knitting for Dummies

5 stars (I love it) - This is a great book. Very clear, and it gives you great ideas. I would recomend getting this book along with "Stitch n' Bitch" because the two together cover all!!! 5 stars (Great book for knitters of all experience levels) - I LOVE this book. I have done crafts for 20+ years, but never really got into knitting. A year or so ago, I decided I wanted to start making sweaters. This was the first and only book I bought to teach myself. I found the directions very simple to understand and very straightforward. This book teaches BOTH English and Continental stitching and incourages the reader to learn both. If you start doing Fair Isle, being able to do both English and Continental comes in very handy. I'll admit, I really didn't read the entire book page my page. Instead, I use it as a reference that is never far from where I am knitting. The book not only gives the patterns for many "fancy" stitches and different cables, but takes the fear out of these. I recommend this book for all knitters. 5 stars (Excellent book) - This is an excellent book, it explains both Continental and English style of knitting and shows how to do many things in detailed illustrations. It teaches all of the basics and some intermediate designs and it makes it all simple to learn. I am so glad that I purchased this book. I already knew some basic knitting but I needed a book that explained the rest of what I did not know. ...

Contemporary Lampworking- A Practical Guide to Shaping Glass in the Flame 2 Vol Set

5 stars (must have for any lamp worker) - this set is the best/ most information i have seen for learning to lampwork. packed with information it covers most techniques and even guides the beginner on how to set up a studio, great buy, worth every penny. 5 stars (The best book in its class) - If you could have only one book, it would be wise to consider this one. I have been in this industry many years and this is by far the best book I have seen out there. 2 stars (It's Just OKAY!) - To the naive public this book is great! Riddled with typos and inconsistant captions this book is not ideal for understanding formal flameworking. The book includes information about the masters and their techniques but trivializes their skill by including no-names and wanna-be's along side. A good amount of important technical information is provided, but through a string of often choppy inconsistant paragraph fragments. This is an excellent PICTURE BOOK leaving a lot to be desired from the academic artisan. Is a great reference for suppliers. In many cases the information falls short of being cohesive and understandable. Recommended for the glass-goer. Recommended for the amateur glassblower (for inspiration). Has popular appeal void of substance. ...

Knitting Over The Edge - Unique Ribs ú Cords ú Appliques ú Color ú Eclectic - The Second Essenti

5 stars (the best of the best!!!) - It's one of the best knitting books I have ever seen, I also own Knitting on the edge (a great book also)but this second volume is greater. Who said that seconds don't work? This volume proves there wrong. If you're a knitting fanatic like me, buy this book, you wont regreated. 5 stars (A unique and worthwhile collection) - Anyone hesitating if Nicky Epstein's second book on knitting borders is worthwhile - worry no more. As her personal intro says, "...completely new...", it is a wonderfully fresh, new addition to her first collection. And, there are many of these new edgings - this is not a skinny, part 2 type of follow up book. The format of the book is the same - clear concise swatch photos, wonderful use of yarns to highlight stitches, and a larger section on color knitting. You will be able to customize your knitting w. ease since the edging patterns details are clear and concise. The author gives a wonderful intro on texture and size as a jump start point for you. The edgings are organized in logical style categories w. a fresh idea of one, "Noveau" added - it stays true to its title. As in the first book, patterns highlighting her new edgings are included. The patterns are like palettes for her fantastc new collection of edgings. This one is a keeper, for sure! ...

Making Metal Jewelry- Projects- Techniques- Inspiration

5 stars (jewelry rave) - This book is a must have for anyone who wants to create beauty with metals, but does not have safe access to a torch. I live in a condo, and had to find an available 'lab' whenever I wanted to complete a piece of jewelry. I have moved on to a new style of fabrication, and love it. 5 stars (An outstanding book on cold-connections.) - A cold connection = any connection made without heat. Joanna has put together a fantastic book that brings together many different cold connection techniques. I have yet to find another jewelry making book that covered as many cold techniques that this one does. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to enhance their jewelry making skills, but is not yet ready to move to the use of a torch for soldering. 5 stars (Great book for beginners!!) - This is an excellent book for beginners or those who are slightly more advanced in jewellery making. The jewellery in this book is made stricly with cold connections, no soldering or heating involved. For the more advanced, such as myself, I find this book great for inspiration to include cold connections in my designs. Step by step instructions and nice photography, this book is a real asset for those even who are just interested in beginning to make jewellery. Enjoy! ...

New Complete Guide to Sewing

4 stars (Another edition, and the first is still the best...) - I have the FIRST edition, 1976, of this book...it is actually just as fact-filled as the new edition, and it hasn't the glitz of color through-out, though it has color plates. But, the information is great in both editions, and I urge the sewer to have this book around. I use it still for reference and refreshing the memory of things I do in sewing too seldom to remember! The new one seems devoid of the neat home projects the first edition had, and they are really retro now!!! 4 stars (Nice overview of sewing techniques) - I purchased this book when I had a general understanding of sewing and wanted to improve my skills without having to take sewing classes. I refer to this book when I have a slight understanding of what I'm doing and need to see the details about how it's done step by step. This book does just that - no skipped steps, illustrations for every step. There are few photos, but the drawings actually serve you better because you can see the seams more clearly. The book covers a very wide range of assembly techniques, which is quite helpful if you've got a blouse all done but are stuck on sewing the collar. I have bought a lot of sewing books and find that any that include "complete guide to..." in the title try to cover too many topics and lack the detailed content many of us are searching for. If you are really lost on how to do pattern alterations or working with knits etc., you will be much happier with a book that only deals with that topic and has the space to give you in-depth instructions. Overall, it is a very good book to have for reference when the pattern you are working with does not give you the extra help you need. 3 stars (Not for beginners) - The book is too advanced for beginners. The book starts off assuming you know how to read and cut patterns, piece together parts, and construct clothing. It also assumes that you are very comfortable with using a sewing machine. The...
