5 stars (Oz and Roizen make anatomy lessons entertaining and offer sound advice for staying healthy.) - `YOU: The Owner's Manual: An Insider's Guide to the Body that will Make You Healthier and Younger' is an interesting health book which teaches readers how the body works in relation to its anatomy and central systems, including hormonal, nervous, digestive, sensory organs, and immune. It also covers topics that deal with the brain, heart, digestive, reproductive glands, lungs, bones and joints. Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen have managed to make learning these topics both entertaining and enjoyable by including illustrations of pathogenic creatures whose role it is to portray illnesses that harm the body. There are also illustrations of benevolent elf creatures whose role it is to guide readers through different parts of the body in terms of names and functionalities. The authors have also incorporated a sense of humor, trivia, and a diet plan. In terms of humor, we have analogies between the activities of muscle cells when engulfing deceased heart tissue and the fighting that regularly presents itself on daily talk shows. In terms of trivia, the authors discuss the frequency at which one should have one's thyroid level checked. They reveal the quantity of air biscuit floatation produced by an average human per day. They also expose information regarding the quantity of times that most persons engage in intercourse. Finally, the authors invite their readers to try a 10-day, 30-recipe diet plan designed to benefit certain systems of the body such as that of immunity. This is an important book because not only does it mention how diseases start and the consequent effects that they have on one's body, but it also provides readers with advice on how to prevent or quash conditions that bear the potentiality to endanger the quality of their lives. Moreover, it also offers advice for ways to preserve the body's health and youthfulness, which in the long run, co... 4 stars (Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands CD) - Very good book. It gives you a dose of reality and makes you take a look at your relationships. It helps to see the things that are taken for granted and to appreciate and understand your spouse. 5 stars (Wonderful!) - I love that Dr. Laura tell's it like it is. Every bit of her advice caused me to step back and take a look at myself and how I can better support and love my husband. 5 stars (to close to home) - Sometimes the truth hurts. 5 stars (Catchy.) - I like evaluating new diet books now and then and this one caught my eye with its catchy title. While the title almost implies that you only have to diet for three hours, the true meaning is that you need to EAT every three hours. By doing this, your body doesn't go into starvation mode which will eventually undermine your goal to lose weight. Reader friendly and well laid out, I'd have to say its not a bad plan all in all. However even if you follow it to a 'T', you'll be doing the same thing you've always had to do to lose weight- eat less and exercise more. Readers interested in other diet books might also want to check out "The No-Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight Loss Plan" 4 stars (Good Information) - the 3-Hour Diet book is an easy book to read and directions are easy to follow. It has helped me in eating properly, not so much in losing weight, just learning to eat the right way and take care of myself 5 stars (The 3-Hour Diet ) - It is a very "easy" read. Information is practicle and makes sense. Lots of encouraging real-life success stories from people who have modified their eating habits with "The 3-Hour Diet" plan. 4 stars (Read this book and start thinking) - Great book to get you thinking about your current small business or one that you are planning. This book takes you through the three types of people : technican, entrepreneur, and manager. Guess what you have to be all three and in good balance. Gerber then discusses how to apply the thinking behind a franchise to your own small business even if you have no intention of ever franchising it. He helps you think about your business from a systems point of view. Gerber spends the rest of the book talking about the business development process, which includes your primary aim, marketing strategy, systems strategy, people strategy, management strategy, etc. I have run a small consulting business for 5 years and I wish had read this book years ago. Oh well, never too late to get on track. 5 stars (Don't Own A Business Without It) - Michael Gerber is the best thing that ever happened to the small business owners of this world. Reading this book changed the way I thought about business. Today I am a marketing coach for professional service firms and small service business owners. One of the first books I recommend they devour is The E-Myth. Actually, I recommend everything Gerber has written. 4 stars (It was as if M Gerber had been watching me) - A great, easy to read book with powerful principles told in an acessible manner. 5 stars (info galore) - This book is a kick-start. It gives you a great desire to get started and a belief that you can do this. Reading it once will not be enough if you want to truly learn all that is offered in this book. 5 stars (One of the best books of the year!) - "How to Buy, Sell and Profit" is, in my opinion, one of the best business books of 2005. This book has insight, education, humor and is easy to read. The information is logically outlined and contains value to both the beginner and advanced eBay seller. Essentially the book is written in story format and not like a textbook, which is what makes it so easy to follow and understand. eBay is a great opportunity for people to make a lot of money, or just get rid of some stuff in their house. In "How to Buy, Sell & Profit on eBay" I learned how best use eBay to apply to my situation. I highly recommend this book. It's the best book I've ever read on the subject of eBay - and one of the best business books I've read this year! 5 stars (Don't miss out on your chance to finally start your eBay business. Get this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) - I have been buying from eBay for years and I have really enjoyed. I've never had a bad experience. I always wondered what it would be like to 'sell' as well. This book was recommended to me by a fantastic marketer called Bill Glazer. I have a lot of respect for him. Anyway I bought the book as Bill advised and it's really great. It gives fantastic advice on how to get started fast. It really would drive you to ACTION. A few days after reading it I sold my first product.Adam lay's out everything very clearly. I followed Adam's advice and started selling things lying around the house and up in the attic. 4 stars (Thank you Bill) - The approach presented by Bill Phillips in "Body for Life" worked fine for me. However, the problem is that you have to have a real commitment and a really strong will power to follow the regime presented by the author. Also, in my opinion, there is too much focus on the looks and too little on the health. I think the latter is more important than the former. I have recently found a book that shifts the attention more towards health and overall wellbeing and it gives you no trouble whatsoever to follow simple rules for food combinations, body cleansing etc. Although I have a lot of respect for Bill Phillips as my first coach I think that "Can We Live 150 Year"s is a superior book to "Body for Life". Sorry Bill. 5 stars (My second copy of this book!) - A terrific book and a great program. This book is actually my second copy, since my first copy completely fell apart after so much use. It is truly a fantastic way to get in shape. I had suffered a couple of serious injuries and have been unable to work out much for the last year, but before the injuries I was well on my way to transforming my body for life. Now, I'm mended and ready to start all over again. It's amazing to see how quickly this program changes your body - with much less effort and sacrifice than a lot of other "get fit quick" programs. The eating for life portion of the book is a little tough to follow at times, since I do enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine now and then, but I just modify it, work out a little harder and enjoy my little treat now and then anyway. The free day allows you to eat whatever you want once a week so you don't feel too deprived, but I found that after you start seeing the changes in your body, you'll be reluctant to just pig out. It's nice to treat yourself without feeling guilty. 1 stars (Narcissism ne plus ultra) - This guy is so self referential that I kept reading mostly from complete astonishment. I bought this because I had five minutes and twenty choices in an airport; why do other people do it? It is self indulgent navel gazing drivel. Mary 3 stars (Not my Coelho's favourate) - The Zahir did not mesmarize me like Coelho's other books. It is not that it is a bad book, not at all, but I just found it to be below my expectation from a book by Paulo Coelho. 5 stars (A FABULOUS FABULIST COMPELLINGLY READ) - British stage, film and TV actor Jamie Glover gives a sterling performance, immediately intriguing listeners with a mesmerizing story of obsession. Told in the first person by a nameless narrator, Glover ably carries us along on a journey, a search not only for a loved one but also perhaps for meaning, answers to the riddle of life. The narrator is a successful author living in Paris with his wife, Esther, who is an accomplished journalist, a war correspondent. She has just returned from Iraq only to disappear again. It's not known whether she ran away or was kidnaped, whether she is alive or dead. She was last seen with a man younger than she, a man who hid his true identity but was known as Mikhail. Could he be her lover? According to author Coelho the idea of the zahir stems from the Islamic tradition, it means "incapable of going unnoticed. It can refer to an object or a person, and that object or person gradually takes over our every thought, until we are unable to think of anything else. This could be considered a state of holiness or a state of madness." We'll leave it to the listener to decide which description is most appropriate for our narrator as he undertakes a journey to find Esther. He knows that she felt a deep unrest and was unsatisfied with her life, although he cannot comprehend why. He was stunned when she announced that she wanted to become a war correspondent, yet he also understood that h... 5 stars (Most Useful Book You Will Ever Read) - I loved this book, it teaches you that getting what you want isn't always bad and how you can make other peole happy to help you out. The book has a good mix of interesting anecdotes mixed in with scientific fact. I think it's great for anyone who is tired of getting pushed around. 5 stars (It is so simple) - Once you understand the various systems and programs that make us up, the whole ordeal of being human becomes so much easier. This book can take you a long way towards that goal. 5 stars (A well researched study on human behavior) - I have long been a student of human behavior. It fascinates me. Naturally, I found this book to be fascinating as well. The book is well researched and does more than present one person's opinion. It summarizes actual reserach results from many, many studies that demonstrate the behaviors under discussion. Reciprocity? Consistency? These are some of the concepts discussed and are immediately applicable both as a tool of influence as well as an understanding of our own behaviors and how to protect ourselves from "forced" behaviors that we are programmed to do even when we don't want to. Yes, we are programmed to perform certain behaviors, and when we don't, we suffer socially. Naturally, this provides a means for some people to take advantage of us. This book gives us an understanding of the behavior and therefore a reasonable defense. So, you don't believe we have automatic programmed responses? Then explain how the Chinese so effectively pursuaded American P.O.W.'s to defend communism during the Korean War. 5 stars ("The Tongue is a Sword" ) - This is a history of the rise and fall of languages from the time of the Sumerians to the present day. The author is fascinated with why some languages became more important and widely-spoken than others and the relationship of language to empire. He asserts quickly that history offers no pattern or pat solution to this question. Among the language histories that Ostler examines are the very-wide ranging Afro-Asiatic group, which encompasses Arabic, Aramaic, and Coptic among others, Turkish, Persian, Chinese, Sanskrit, Greek, and the major European languages. He focuses mostly on the literate Old World languages, although he has a chapter on Quechua and Nahuatl, the languages of the Incas and Aztecs respectively. As could be expected in a wide-ranging book, I found some chapters to be more interesting and informative than others. Scattered amongst the chapters are plenty of good maps and a large number of quotations and reproductions of inscriptions from a large number of languages. This is a well-produced book. I'll give this book the highest rating, but I must comment that I was a bit disappointed with the cautious conclusions of the author. One of his more interesting statements was that Arabic, an Afro-Asiatic language, became established only in "territories that had previously spoken an Afro-Asiatic language" That suggests that the conquest of one language over another may have something to do with the similarity in structure of the language -- or, in other words, English is not likely to supplant Chinese or the reverse. This point is not really developed to its fullest extent. Also, the section of the book I most look forward to was "What makes a language learnable?" but it is very brief. I would liked to have seen a lot more discussion of his point that "the essence of a language, its structure, can play a role in its viability." That's a dangerous and intriguing statement in that it implies that some lan... 5 stars (Classic Genius) - This is one of the books that every adult should read. I found several stories in the book which seemed like they were right out of my own life situations -- and you probably will too. It is very universal and will help you. 1 stars (Attention Sister Venuvians: We Must Punish This John Gray By Forever Denying Him Sex!!!) - The most sexist, biased, silly, unfounded, unhelpful waste of time to come from a publishing house in many a moon. This supposed relationship enhancer is the biggest example of playing with a loaded gun since the serpent in the Garden of Eden offered marriage advice to Eve. I know this is now a cult hit but I wonder how many relationships this exercise in stereotyping has busted up? Gray would have us accept that humans are without variation walking examples of either Martians or Venuvians. JMJ, but who on earth falls for this hogswallow? Apparently a lot of people by the sales numbers. Gray would like to make us think all men are confrontation-seeking warriors who reason at waist level. (Actually only half of that statement is true.) He makes a case that men dwell on this plane to spread their DNA, make quick, simple decisions and scratch themselves in public. Women, the less than sage Gray wants it know, are emotion-driven machines turned on and off by nesting instincts, the desire for endless communication and a snuggly need for flattery and security. We are supreme manipulators employing sex as the coin of the realm in the marketplace of romance. This book has all the depth of a three-panel Sunday comic strip. Unfortunately rather than going through the talk show circuit and dying a natural death in the 1990's, I saw a new edition of this was out since the one I read for a class. "Updated!" it proclaimed. 5 stars (A Must-Read!) - Professor Clayton M. Christensen's excellent book is a classic of strategy literature. The innovator's dilemma is that doing the right things can lead to failure. Sometimes it is wrong to listen to customers, invest in the highest return opportunities and do all of the things that made a successful company succeed. Clearly written, amply documented, provocative and challenging, this book is indispensable for anyone in business. If it has a shortcoming, it is that it focuses more on the dilemma than on resolving it and it does not offer specific remedial prescriptions. However, Christensen has authored or co-authored two other books that attempt to remedy that deficiency. We heartily recommend this book, which remains the leader of the three. It has the potential to change the way managers think about business - any business. 5 stars (Entrepreneurs - read this & gain the upper hand) - In this revolutionary bestseller, Harvard professor Clayton M. Christensen says outstanding companies can do everything right and still lose their market leadership, or worse, disappear completely. And he not only proves what he says; he tells others how to avoid a similar fate. To be a successful entrepreneur you must be able to capitalize on change. "The Innovator's Dilemma" is all about dealing with change, from the incumbent's point of view. How valuable do you think it would be to understand how your larger competitors think? That's exactly what this book talks about. Most large, established firms are inherently weak in one area - they cling to the status quo with a vengeance. While talk of innovation is commonplace, it is the attacker (entrepreneurs) who holds a definitive advantage. Without legacy systems and overbearing bureaucracy it is the entrepreneur who has the upper hand. "The Innovator's Dilemma" consists of two major parts: Part One: Why Great Companies Fail Part Two: Managing Disruptive Change This is one of the most insightful books on bus... 4 stars (Excellent) - This is an excellent and important book of its genre, but I will never forget Frank McCourt's repeated advice to us after studying creative writing with him in High School -- write what you know. If you just stick to that little kernel, the worst grammer, the worst punctuation, the worst spelling -- none of it will matter. When you know your subject, the writing is effortless... and amazing. 5 stars (RE: Synaptic Mogul's Puzzling Review) - I too read Bill Zinsser--years ago. It puzzles me that Synaptic mogul could review Shadow Divers--a poorly written book--with the benefit of having just read On Writing Well--an excellent book--and discover no writing errors whatsoever. (See my review of Shadow Divers.) I wonder what Bill Zinsser himself would say about Shadow Divers? On Writing Well was the best book of it's time. Now there are other books that are as good as Zinsser's, or better,"Words Fail Me," for instance. 5 stars (How To Improve Your Book Reviews on Amazon) - Zinsser asserts that writing well can be learned. This is good news. I thought I wrote well until I compared my reviews to those of some of the consistent top reviewers on Amazon. How do they do that? According to Zinsser (and affirmed by Tom Clancy on a TV interview), good writers follow rules, editing each sentence and paragraph multiple times. They write against deadlines whether or not they're feeling inspired. When done properly, the finished product can look deceptively simple to write. Following is my liberally abridged summary of Zinsser's rules: 1. Do - prune out every word that does not perform a necessary function. Strip each sentence to its cleanest components. A clear sentence is no accident. 2. Do - use the thesaurus liberally. Learn the small gradations between word that seem to be synonyms. 3. Do - try to improve the rhythm by reversing the order of a sentence, substituting a word that has freshness or oddity and by varying the lengths of sentences.... 1 stars (Don't be so silly) - This book is silly. Fancy positing the idea that a lion rules the land. It's almost as silly as this book I read the other day about a man who does magic tricks and then people get suspicious of him so they kill him but then he comes back as a zombie, a nice zombie, he doesn't eat brains or anything and then he flies off home. The lion in this story has been compared to him I believe... 5 stars (Good clean fun!) - I enjoyed the stories again after 30 years between the first read. 4 stars (Fantasy for Children at it's best!) - I wanted to purchase the Chronicles not because of the upcoming film series (Come On, you know Disney will #$@? it up)...but to read to my child. Reading them again to him has shown me just how deceptively complex the stories are; and what is amazing is how moral and civil lessons, in true Christian sense, are taught and exemplified by the children's adventures: Most importantly is the ideal of forgiveness; which is the core of Christianity but which seems to have been forgotten, particularly by the right-wing lunatics who I am appalled by hearing themselves called Christians...children of Mammon, perhaps, but Christians? Riiiight. Anyway, this edition is wonderful, I gave it four out of five stars for one flaw, which is the type-setting. It seems alot of the page-breaks were left in, resulting in one sentence being cut almost half a page early, and continued below it, as well as a few words which are still hyphenated but shouldn't be as they are in the midst of a line, and not the end of the margins. Nonetheless, the binding is great, sturdy and heavy, which has not been the case with all my hard-bound books of late. This is definately a volume I would recommend, and excellent to keep for the grandchildren and so forth, on your best shelf. 4 stars (Nice Intro to Level 5) - This article is a nice insight into Jim Collin's theory on Level 5 leaders, and why they are important. But, without context to the rest of the book "Good to Great", the article lacks the punch that the book does. If you like what he writes about being a Level 5 leader, go buy the book! 4 stars (Good to Great - Level 5 leadership) - I found this research book by Jim Collins and his research team to be very insighful book with some interesting findings. The part of the research that interested me most was the Level 5 leadership styles of the good to great CEO's. I am not an individual that is at a point who understands the complexity of a CEO's thought's and idea's, however reading this book was not a difficult thing to understand...I was very impressed with how Jim Collins put together the foundation of this book into understandable terms, and was't trying to be too wordy! The flow of the chapters were easy to conceptualize, and the concepts themselves were not too difficult. 5 stars (Leadership to outperform the market) - Jim Collins operates a management research laboratory in Boulder, Colorado. Together with Jerry I. Porras he wrote the bestseller 'Built to Last' (1994). This article was published in the January 2001 issue of the Harvard Business Review. This article reports on the author's research into how good companies can become great ones. "We looked for companies that had shifted from good performance to great performance - and sustained it." Eventually, the research identified 11 good-to-great examples who on average outperformed the general stock market by 6.9 times for 15 years. (There is a sidebar explaining the research method.) According to the author and his research team all great companies had one thing in common: Level 5 leaders. "Level 5 leaders are a study in duality: modest and willful, shy and fearless." Level 5 leadership requires personal humility and personal will. But the author notes that it is not jus... This book intends to scare you into looking at more and more elaborate proceedings. Finally, you are at the point where you believe no one but a diety called a "wedding planner" can actually pull off a wedding. My friends who are married knew what sort of wedding I had in mind and did not hestitate to tell me to send the book BACK. 5 stars (This massive guide is all-inclusive and brilliant) - Not just for Etiquette!
